The Metro series will get a prequel, but only for VR

A new installment in the Metro series of action games based on Dmitry Glukhovsky’s novels is in development. The project, called Metro Awakening, was revealed at the State of Play presentation of Sony’s gaming division.

“Metro Awakening, a prequel from author and creator of the Metro series Dmitry Glukhovsky, will plunge players headfirst into a ruthless post-apocalyptic world that combines the core elements of the series: atmospheric exploration, storytelling and stealth combat,” Deep Silver states.

Metro Awakening is being developed not by 4A Games, but by Vertigo Games studio. The game will be a prequel: the events of Metro Awakening take place in 2028, a few years before Metro 2033.

As before, players will explore the dungeons of Moscow. The gameplay video flashes familiar weapons, and the environment is also reminiscent of Metro 2033.

Metro Awakening is being developed only for virtual reality headsets PlayStation VR2, Quest 2 and 3, as well as devices with Steam VR support. The game is scheduled for release by the end of 2024.
