Minimal changes: Digital Foundry has rated The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered for PS5

Digital Foundry specialist Oliver Mackenzie presented a technical analysis of The Last of Us Part II Remastered for PlayStation 5. He noted that the game was still showing outstanding visuals when it was released in 2020, so the remaster is not much different from the original.

Mackenzie praised the remaster, calling it just good and not breakthrough. Not the level of The Last of Us Part I remake, but the price tag is appropriate. According to him, it’s the best way to play one of the most accomplished games of the last generation right now.

  • Performance mode is the usual 1440p/60 FPS
  • Naughty Dog has significantly reduced the pop-in of vegetation, as well as increased the density of grass and detail at long distances
  • Shadows remained at the same level, there is almost no difference in textures compared to the original, but improved texture filtering.
  • Small tweaks to lighting and shadows in some scenes – the same applies to some of the cutscenes.
  • In 4K/30 FPS quality mode – graphically the difference is minimal compared to the performance mode, but the picture itself is sharper due to the increased resolution.
  • Performance in both modes is decent – almost perfect 60 FPS and stable 30 FPS; there is a variant of the game in 40 FPS at 120 Hz and with unlocked frame rate – 75-100 FPS in performance mode and 40-60 FPS in quality mode.
  • Loads have been reduced from 40-50 seconds to 16-17 seconds
  • FOV (field of view) setting is now available

The Last of Us Part II re-release for PS5 will go on sale January 19. The upgrade costs $10 for owners of the original. The full price of the re-release is $49.99
