What we’ll be playing in January: The Last of Us Part II Remastered, Tekken 8, Like a Dragon, and more

Keeping track of all the newest video games being released is an increasingly difficult task, given the plethora of releases on PC, PS5, Xbox, Switch, and mobile devices. But if we cut through the noise, we can identify a number of really significant titles that come out every month.

January is not the most active month, but 2024 is starting off quite hot, as Tekken 8, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, and Naughty Dog’s remaster of The Last of Us Part II are on the way. And on the indie front, there are a lot of promising new releases, such as the new platformer with unique characters The Cub and the groundbreaking RPG Sovereign Syndicate.

Main releases

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5 and Switch
Release date: January 18

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown – Gameplay Overview
This month sees the long-awaited return of the Prince of Persia franchise with a return to its roots as a platformer. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown combines classic action with temporary abilities reminiscent of the later parts of the series. The game can be a worthy return to the roots, so you should pay attention to it.

Another Code: Recollection

Platforms: Nintendo Switch
Release date: January 19

The Japanese visual novel genre has gained popularity and recognition among Western audiences on the Nintendo DS, and one of its first notable representatives on this system was Another Code: Two Memories (known as Trace Memory). Later, the sequel Another Code was released on Wii: R. At one time, the Another Code games were niche, but today they are still well remembered, and they get another chance to shine in a full remake for Switch called Another Code: Recollection. Given the current fashion for visual novels, there’s hope that these games will get a little more recognition this time around.

The Last of Us Part II Remastered

Platforms: PS5
Release date: January 19

The Last of Us Part II came out just a few months before the PS5 release, but it never received a proper update for Sony’s new console. This month everything will change. The Last of Us II Remastered not only improves the game’s graphics, but also adds a brand new mode with bagel elements, returns several locations cut from the original game, and much more. Will this game still cause controversy? Probably. But if you like what TLOU2 offers, this version will definitely be the best. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4 and PS5
Release date: June 26

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is the next major installment in the franchise, and like Yakuza: Like a Dragon 2020, it will once again feature a crazy turn-based combat system rather than the traditional action with fights. The game will also feature a character from the past – both the new protagonist Ichiban Kasuga and Kazuma Kiryu in the series’ first international location, Hawaii. This game could be a hit this month, find out more here

Tekken 8.

Platforms: PC, Xbox Series X/S and PS5
Release date: January 26

Last year was a pretty big year for fighting games, with the release of titles like Street Fighter 6 and Mortal Kombat 1, and now Namco Bandai is kicking off 2024 with the release of Tekken 8. Developed on the Unreal Engine 5, Tekken 8 will be one of the best-looking entries in its genre to date and should live up to expectations in terms of gameplay with new mechanics designed to stimulate aggressive play.

Promising Indie projects

The Night is Grey

Platforms: PC
Release date: January 5

In The Night is Grey, players will play the role of Graham, an ordinary guy who accidentally stumbles upon lost girls whom he must help survive while being chased by very strange wolves. Paying tribute to the graphic quests of yesteryear, The Night is Grey offers a two-dimensional animated visual combined with a darker tone.

Sovereign Syndicate

Platforms: PC
Release date: January 15

Sovereign Syndicate is a new RPG with a combination of Victorian scenery and all sorts of mythological creatures, from minotaurs to cyclopes and others. There are also dice in this game, and the randomness of certain moments is determined by a unique tarot card divination system.

The Cub

Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch
Release date: January 19

Anyone who once had a Sega Mega Drive fondly remembers Disney games – The Lion King, Aladdin, and The Jungle Book were rightfully considered masterpieces. The Cub tries to revive the feelings of those games by offering smooth animation, challenging platforming tasks, and all this in a post-apocalyptic setting. The result is an experience that’s both nostalgic and modern at the same time.
