Nintendo Switch 2 release pushed back to the first quarter of 2025

According to reports from Brazilian gaming journalist Pedro Henrique Lutti Lippe, Nintendo is planning to release its new Switch 2 console in early 2025, but not beyond the same fiscal year. This information was also confirmed by Eurogamer after talking to some developers.

Nintendo Switch 2 was previously expected to be released later this year, so pushing it to early 2025 means extra time to prepare the launch lineup of games while still financially benefiting from a Switch 2 release in the same fiscal year.

Last year, it was reported that the Nintendo Switch 2’s capabilities were being shown off to developers at Gamescom in August in the form of tech demos. And even earlier, some details about the hardware of the future console became known to major game publishers.

In particular, in the published correspondence of top managers of Activision Blizzard discussed the ability of Switch 2 to run games series Call of Duty. This data was made publicly available as part of a legal battle over Microsoft’s takeover of the company.

However, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa called it a rumor. At the same time, according to the GDC report, there are already hundreds of developers currently working on projects to launch on Nintendo’s new console. So Nintendo is clearly not telling the whole story.

Reuters: Nintendo Switch 2 will get a custom chip from NVIDIA

Reuters sources have reported that the Nintendo Switch 2 console will utilize a custom solution from NVIDIA. The current generation runs on Tegra X1, so the news isn’t particularly surprising.

Last spring, the developer reasoned that if Nintendo were to drop the Tegra X1 in the new Switch, backwards compatibility would be jeopardized. Recently, however, rumors have started circulating that Switch 2 will have backwards compatibility with digital copies and cartridges.

According to insiders, the Nintendo Switch 2 will be unveiled next month. A partner Nintendo Direct is rumored to be expected this week.

Nintendo Switch 2 will get backwards compatibility with physical and digital copies of games

The next console from Nintendo will reportedly be backwards compatible with both physical and digital copies of games.

This was reported by Brazilian site Universo Nintendo, which has in the past repeatedly published correct information about a number of Nintendo Direct presentations and the official title of Sonic X Shadow Generations prior to the announcement.

Centro Leaks’ Twitter account shared a translation of the details, which suggests that original Nintendo Switch games will be able to run on the company’s next console from both cartridge and eShop.

Developers will allegedly also be able to “enhance” games released for the original Nintendo Switch to take advantage of the Switch 2’s extra performance. This coincides with previous reports that Nintendo was showing off a “boosted” version of The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild running on the new hardware.

The Nintendo Switch 2, or whatever it’s called, has been the subject of many rumors in recent months. One survey of developers revealed that 8% of them are already working on games for the Switch successor. Another analyst claimed that the console will come out this year with an 8-inch LCD screen.

We’ll only know for sure when Nintendo sees fit to reveal details, but given the shaft of rumors, it’s clear they’re preparing something massive.

GDC survey: 8% of developers make games for Nintendo Switch 2

During the GDC 2024 conference, the State of the Game Industry survey was released, revealing that out of over 3,000 developers surveyed, 8% of respondents, or about 250 people, are working on games for Nintendo’s next console.

The survey includes the voices of both AAA studio employees and indie teams. The actual figure is very likely to be higher. Many teams simply did not attend GDC or could not divulge information.

In a separate GDC 2024 State of the Game Industry poll, it was revealed that 32% of developers are most interested in a Nintendo Switch successor. 41% named PS5, 62% – PC.
